Saturn : New L Series in the midsize segment

SATURN CORPORATION LAUNCHES MID-SIZE SEDAN AND WAGON

July 11, 1999 --Saturn Corporation, the company that was formed specifically to change the way American small cars are marketed and sold, is launching a new mid-size sedan and wagon. Dubbed the "L"-Series for "larger," the new Saturn LS sedan and LW wagon have already begun arriving at Saturn retailers across the nation.

Saturn's new L Series

"We are very excited about our new sedan and wagon," said Cynthia Trudell, president of Saturn Corporation.

"Saturn made a significant impact on the automobile industry at its beginning, and we’re about to make another big splash with two exciting new products." The new Saturn LS sedan and LW wagon feature many items demanded by mid-size car buyers, including an available V6 engine, four-wheel independent suspension, anti-lock brakes, and leather seating areas. However, they also retain many of the distinctive features Saturn has become known for, including Saturn’s signature headlamp and tail lamp designs and Saturn-exclusive polymer body-side panels, which resist dents and dings.

The new Saturn mid-size sedan is available in three models, the LS, LS1 and LS2. The wagon is available in two versions, the LW1 and LW2.

Standard on the base LS/LS1 sedan and LW wagon is an all-new, Saturn- exclusive 2.2-liter dual overhead cam four-cylinder engine that provides 137 horsepower @ 5,800 rpm. A 3.0-liter dual overhead cam V6 engine, which is available on the LS2 and LW2, puts out 182 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm.

All engines are available with a four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, while a five-speed manual transmission is standard with the LS/LS1 sedans.

Both the Saturn LS and LW feature power front disc, rear drum brakes, with power four-wheel disc brakes standard on the LS2 and LW2. ABS with electronic traction control is available as optional equipment on all new Saturn LS and LW models.

The four-wheel independent suspension includes front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link with shock/spring modules, ensuring a smooth, comfortable ride. Front and rear stabilizer bars reduce body roll while turning and cornering.

Interior comforts include available leather-seating areas, available state-of-the art sound system, and specially designed seats. A unique oil-change status monitor alerts the driver when it’s time for an oil change based on that particular driver’s patterns.

With an overall length of more than 190 inches, these new Saturns fit easily into the mid-size category. Five-passenger seating is complemented in the sedan with nearly 18 cubic feet of storage space in the trunk – the largest in its class.

"These new Saturns have all the features required to not just enter, but lead the mid-size market," said Trudell. "After 10 years and more than two million small cars, Saturn can now offer its customers a logical step-up as they consider purchasing a mid-size vehicle."

Saturn’s new mid-size offerings will benefit from the award-winning Saturn retail experience, which is available at more than 300 retailers nationwide.
