Clayton will be responsible for Saturn's
Spring Hill, Tenn., and Wilmington, Del., plant operations,
overseeing continued production improvements and the
growth of the Saturn product portfolio. She will help
lead the Saturn-UAW partnership and work closely with
Saturn-dedicated engineering and marketing teams from
GM.
Clayton joined GM as a co-op student
with the Moraine, Ohio, assembly plant in 1983. She
held various production, engineering and maintenance
assignments at the plant until 1992, when she became
its assistant superintendent of production. In 1994,
she was promoted to area manager of body operations
at Fort Wayne, Ind., and in 1995 she was named area
manager of general assembly. She was appointed assistant
plant manager at Fort Wayne in 1997, and named plant
manager at GM's Oshawa, Ontario, truck assembly plant
in 1999.
She played an integral role in the
launch of the original and redesigned midsize Chevrolet
Blazer, GMC Jimmy and Oldsmobile Bravada sport utility
vehicles, as well as the Chevrolet and GMC full-size
pickup trucks.

History: TRUDELL
ELECTED SATURN CHAIRMAN AND PRESIDENT
TROY, MICH. – The
General Motors Board of Directors has elected Cynthia M. Trudell
a GM vice president and chairman and president of Saturn Corporation,
a wholly-owned subsidiary of GM, effective January 1, 1999.
She will replace Donald W. Hudler, also a GM vice president,
who has been serving as president of Saturn since 1995, and
as chairman since April 1, 1997. He will retire on January 1,
1999 after 43 years with GM and Saturn.
Trudell will report directly to Donald E. Hackworth, GM senior
vice president and group executive, North American Car Group.
In her new role,
Trudell will have responsibility for Saturn's strategic direction
within GM and leading the company's operations, including sales,
service, marketing, engineering, manufacturing, and participating
in and facilitating the Saturn UAW partnership.
Trudell is currently
president of IBC Vehicles, a wholly-owned GM operation in Luton,
England, which produces the Frontera four-wheel-drive vehicle,
and was initially formed in partnership with Isuzu of Japan
in 1987.
Trudell began her
career in 1979 with the Ford Motor Co. in Windsor, Canada as
a chemical process engineer. In 1981, she joined GM at the Windsor
Transmission Plant as a senior engineering supervisor, and later
was named superintendent of manufacturing.
She was appointed
manufacturing engineering manager at the Willow Run Transmission
complex in Ypsilanti, Mich. in 1987, and in 1989, she became
operations manager, responsible for the manufacture and assembly
of transmission components.
In 1990, Trudell
joined Powertrain Advanced Manufacturing Systems as chief engineer
in charge of process technologies, artificial intelligence systems
and manufacturing system architecture for future engine and
transmission products. In 1992, she was appointed site manager,
engine and foundry operations, St. Catherine's Ontario.
Following this
assignment, Trudell was named, in 1995, plant manager of the
Wilmington Assembly Center in Wilmington, Del. Wilmington will
be a dedicated Saturn assembly plant beginning next year when
it will produce the all-new mid-size L-Series models.
Trudell, born in
1953, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, earned a doctorate
in physical chemistry at the University of Windsor, Ontario
in 1978.
