At the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi provided an intriguing foretaste of the car of the future with its Al 2 design study.

The aluminum body is based on the Audi Space Frame principle, as used on the A8. The resulting weight saving is about 250 kg, even when the car is fitted with an extensive range of comfort and safety equipment features. The Al 2 also incorporated a technology study: the world’s first three-cylinder Fuel Direct Injection engine. This engine develops 55 kW (75 bhp) from a displacement of 1.2 liters.

The Al 2 open end , presented at the Tokyo Motor Show, is a derivative version of the Al 2 placing special emphasis on substance and driving pleasure, with novel, innovative scope for variation.
