Chateau St. Jean,
the old and the new portal for Bugatti customers
Visit with us Ettore Bugatti's
home, Chateau St. Jean, near Molsheim, France. Automotive Intelligence
was there and brought some photos of the marvelous environment.
The
start was made by the EB 118 study, which was shown
at the Paris Motor Show 1998. The EB118 was produced by Giorgetto Giugiaro
/ ItalDesign contracted by Volkswagen and has been
further developed to make this unmistakable four door saloon.
Bugatti 118 Concept
This
engine, which was developed by Volkswagen, has
three rows of 6-cylinder banks which are joined in a "W" form. With a
capacity of 6.3 litres, the direct injection engine has an output of 408
kW / 555 bhp at 6,800 rpm and a maximum
torque of 650 Newton metres (Nm) at 4,000 rpm.
The model
name Bugatti EB 218 refers to the 18-cylinder engine, the first of its
kind to be used in a passenger vehicle.
At the
1999 Frankfurt International Motor show, Volkswagen presented the new
study Bugatti 18/3 Chiron. The EB18-3 was produced by Giorgetto Giugiaro
/ ItalDesign under contract of Volkswagen.
The Bugatti
tradition of successful sports cars is reflected in the name chosen for
this design study, which commemorates the former Bugatti factory driver
Pierre Veyron. A Frenchman, he achieved numerous racing successes for
this historic marque, culminating in victory in the Le Mans 24-hour race
in 1939.
Hartmut
Warkuß, head of Volkswagen's "Center of Excellence Design", and his team
have successfully reinterpreted the traditional values of Bugatti and
created a sports car whose very appearance promises enormous power. The
designers have thus displayed their profound understanding of the essence
of the Bugatti marque.
The Bugatti
EB 16·4 "Veyron" design study has particularly daring styling.
