The V8 engine is available in two different versions for both the A6 saloon and the A6 Avant. The new Audi A6 4.2 quattro with an output of 220 kW (300 bhp) and the A6 3.7 that will follow later, with an output of 191 kW (260 bhp), offer sophisticated technology, powerful engine-output characteristics, striking design and dynamic elegance. Quattro´s permanent four-wheel-drive, supplied as standard on the Audi A6 4.2 quattro and available as an option on the A6 3.7, teams up with the ESP Electronic Stability Program and the 5-speed tiptronic into a classic Audi combination of advanced technical concepts unequalled by any competitor, assuring an impressive driving sensation and maximum driving safety.

The subtle yet striking body modifications emphasize the potential of Audi A6 cars with V8 engines. In conjunction with body lines that are reminiscent of a coupÈ and the exquisite equipment features, the Audi A6 4.2 quattro and A6 3.7 are a highly tasteful interpretation of the A6, with a clear emphasis on luxury and comfort. The principal innovations are the striking design of the distinctive nose end, the new geometry of the clear-glass headlights, wheel arches with a sporting accent, track-width enlargement on the front and rear axles, and the all-aluminium independent suspension. The ESP Electronic Stability Program fitted as standard and a high-performance brake system assure impressive driving dynamics. The 5-speed tiptronic, real leather equipment and trim, wooden inserts, front centre armrest, DIS Driver Information System and theft alarm system with interior surveillance are likewise included in the standard specification. The Avant models have air springs at the rear, for springing behaviour that is virtually independent of the load. A self-levelling suspension function is also inclusive. The saloon version comes with rear seats with an individual character. The all-aluminium suspension, in combination with modified damper characteristics, assure a high standard of on-road and driving comfort. Aluminium brake callipers serve to reduce unsprung masses. A separate range of wheels, with a 16-inch version as standard and two optional 8J x17 cast aluminium wheels, emphasizes its dynamic aura. Side airbags at the front, driver and front-passenger airbags and pyrotechnical belt tensioners for all 3-point belts are fitted as standard. Side airbags integrated into the rear seat back are available as an option. An impressive new addition to the equipment range is SIDEGUARD, the Audi head airbag system which protects both front and rear passengers equally effectively in the event of lateral impact, as the ideal complement to the other airbags.

The new A6 eight-cylinder models are aimed above all at customers with a particular preference for high performance and comfort, with modern value systems and very high expectations of their car. Such customers appreciate unconventional design, high individual appeal and reliability, quality that maintains its value for a long time to come, and of course a high degree of active and passive safety. The market launch in Germany will begin in spring 1999 with the Audi A6 4.2 quattro, which will cost DM 103,500, or DM 107,300 for the Avant version. The two versions of the A6 3.7 will follow in the second half of the year.
