The World of Audi at the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show
photo: Automotive Intelligence "In Future - Audi" is the company's motto for the final Frankfurt Motor Show of the millennium. Looking to the future means adopting new methods of communication and presentation. The stand design, by the Düsseldorf architects Ingenhoven, Overdieck und Partner, is a radically new engineering structure which provides a novel backdrop to the exhibits, and takes visitors on a voyage of discovery through the World of Audi. The architecture, design, vehicle presentation, lighting and projection techniques, communication measures and visitor service facilities combine to form a harmonious overall picture. The two-storey stand, covering a floor area of 4,200 square metres, is surrounded by a transparent "loop" structure specially developed for this purpose: a 320 metre long, curving facade element of triangular glass panes connected by means of stainless steel tubes and cables. Transparency, permeability and therefore brightness are the key features of the installation. A constant succession of images, such as a field of corn waving in the breeze, is projected onto the "loop". The projection areas act as the links between the various different zones of the stand, transforming it into the "World of Audi". The software-controlled video projection technology is supported by lighting with stepless colour mixing at the boundary zones of the "loop". The various groups of vehicles are located in the "loop" recesses on the ground floor. The visitor reaches the guest lounge, business lounge and dealer meeting point on the first floor via three ellipsoidal stairways. Audi is also exhibiting its high-security models on the first floor. Younger visitors to the Frankfurt Motor Show can play, paint and indulge in crafts in the Audi Kids' Club while their parents explore the Audi stand and obtain product advice. Visitors can enjoy the open vista of the entire exhibition stand from the lounge and catering zones on the upper floors, thanks to the transparent sections of the "loop".
