Ready to go: BMW Park Assistant in Pole Position Munich/Cologne, Germany - An increasing number of BMW drivers will soon be able to let their car find a parking space for them. They will profit from a telematics project which BMW developed in cooperation with "stadtinfoköln" (Cologne city information). It is now ready for practical implementation and will be available to BMW customers as soon as possible. Once again BMW proves its customer-oriented Europe-wide pioneering role in the areas of research, development and practical application of telematics services in the automobile. The Park Assistant really makes finding a parking place smooth and easy for the driver: after entering his destination in the BMW navigation system, the service provider transmits suitable car park locations. The driver then selects one of these and at the same time can also reserve a space for a certain time. The navigation system then takes him there taking into account the current traffic conditions. A new payment system for public parking was also developed as part of this project. The conventional parking ticket is replaced by a display in the car which displays an electronic parking ticket for monitoring purposes. You no longer need to go pay at a ticket machine. The parking fee is calculated precisely to the minute and is debited to your account. The "stadtinfoköln" research project is promoted by the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Research (BMBF) and is financed by 15 project partners. The aim is to provide a new range of information and services (innercity traffic/public transport) for urban living. A further goal is to optimize the usage of existing means of transport to achieve an ecological, city-compatible flow of traffic in urban congestion. BMW's commitment focuses on providing current information as well as forecasts regarding traffic, available parking spaces and public transport availability in the car. The cathedral city of Cologne provides outstanding infrastructure and organization conditions for this project. (1. December 2000) [Homepage] [
