Chevrolet Announces Official Route For 2002 Salt City Olympic Torch Relay Chevy To Deliver Olympic Flame To Major Cities And Hometowns Across the Country DETROIT - Chevrolet Motor Division will drive the 2002 Olympic Torch Relay to hometowns across the country, beginning December 4, 2001, exactly one year from today. Chevrolet, along with the Salt Lake Organizing Committee and sponsorship partner Coca-Cola, announced today the route the Olympic Flame will travel on its way to Salt Lake City, Utah, home of the XIX Olympic Winter Games. Chevrolet will lead the 2002 Olympic Torch Relay through 80 U.S. cities and hundreds of hometowns across the country, including Detroit, Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Chicago and New York. The Olympic Flame will travel more than 13,500 miles and pass through 46 U.S. states. More than 11,500 torchbearers will assist with carrying the flame during the 65-day Relay. In addition to torchbearers, the Olympic Flame will travel by Chevrolet vehicles, airplane, train, ship, dog sled, skier, horse-drawn sleigh, snowmobile, ice skaters, prairie schooner and other unique modes of transportation. "Chevrolet's involvement in the Olympic Torch Relay is an opportunity to share the excitement of the Olympic Spirit with hometowns across the country," said Mac Whisner, Chevrolet director of truck advertising and promotion. "Chevrolet is proud to bring the Olympic experience directly to millions of Americans by allowing them to participate in the celebration." The Olympic Flame will travel within a convoy comprised of approximately 50 Chevy vehicles. The core Relay is made up of 10 vehicles that travel in a single line with the Torchbearers and Support Runners to ensure the safe arrival of the Olympic Flame from city to city and eventually into the Olympic Stadium. The core Relay will be comprised of 10 Chevrolet vehicles, including the Corvette, Trailblazer, Impala, Avalanche and Suburban. The overall caravan will also include Chevrolet vehicles used for advance operations, torchbearer shuttles, stage production trucks and support equipment. "Chevrolet is looking forward to taking command of the Relay with our new Avalanche, which debuts in dealerships in spring 2001. By utilizing our network of 4,300 dealers, who provide a complete line up of long-lasting, dependable vehicles, Chevrolet is uniquely qualified to help put the relay on the road and share this exciting event with millions of Americans," Whisner added. "Chevrolet will play a key role in making the 2002 Olympic Torch Relay the most extensive and far-reaching in Olympic Winter Games history." For the first time, the Olympic Flame will pass through Alaska. The flame will also travel through all other previous U.S. Olympic host cities: Atlanta, Georgia; Lake Placid, New York; Los Angeles, California; Squaw Valley, California; and St. Louis, Missouri. The Relay will begin on December 4, 2001 in Atlanta, the last place the Olympic Flame rested on U.S. soil. Thousands of Americans will have the opportunity to become a 2002 Olympic Torchbearer, and information on the selection process will be announced in February 2001.
