Aditya Vij Takes Over As President And Managing Director Of GM India Becomes First Indian To Head GM India's Operations Mr. Aditya Vij has taken over as the new President & Managing Director of General Motors India. Mr. Vij is the first Indian to head the operations of GM India and succeeds Mr. Richard C. Swando who has since been posted to GM Headquarters at Detroit. After assuming office, Mr. Vij said, "This is an exciting time to be in India. The automobile market is forecast to continue to grow. Most of the leading automotive manufacturers have a presence in India and the market is extremely competitive. I feel really privileged and honoured to have been entrusted with the responsibility of spearheading GM India's operations in such challenging times. I look forward to building on the platform that has already been created and established by the Opel Corsa and the all new Opel Astra as strong competitors in their respective segments and further strengthen GM's presence in India. Mr. Aditya Vij to be based at the GM India's headquarters in New Delhi will also oversee GM's operations in India including the manufacturing facility at Halol. He will spearhead the expansion of GM's presence in this region during his tenure. Mr. Vij brings with him a wealth of experience having held senior positions in various overseas GM units. Commenting on the appointment of Mr. Vij, Mr. P. Balendran, V. P Corporate Affairs - GM India said, "New millennium has seen a change in the company's fortunes, success of the Opel Astra and the New Corsa has set us on a firm footing in the market. The appointment of Mr. Vij, who interestingly has the distinction of becoming the first Indian to head the Indian arm of the number one company in the world, reinforces GM Corporation's commitment to the Indian market. We are confident that Mr. Vij's drive, enthusiasm and proven track record combined with his leadership skills will lead GM India to further improve our market share and strengthen our position in the market. Mr. Aditya Vij who brings with him wide and varied experience having held senior positions in various GM overseas operations, began his career in GM as a Senior Executive of new products at Adam Opel in Germany in 1991. Having worked in Germany and GM's European headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, he was appointed as Director (Sales & Marketing) at GM India in 1995. He remained in this position till his elevation as General Director, Opel Southeast Europe based at Budapest, Hungary. During his tenure in Hungary, Mr. Vij was responsible for Opel's presence in 9 (nine) Central European countries. Mr. Vij holds a bachelors degree in Commerce from Shri Ram College of Commerce in Delhi and is a Fellow Chartered Accountant from "The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India". In addition, he did his MBA from IMD, Switzerland. General Motors India is a fully owned subsidiary of General Motors Corporation of USA, the Number One company in the fortune 500 list for the 12th consecutive year.
