SEAT : The Engineering Center

A quarter century in the avant-garde of the future

In September, Seat will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Technical Centre, whose installations dedicated to Research and Development have spearheaded the company’s evolution, but which, above all, are a guarantee for the future and the brand’s identity.

Throughout the year 2000, 121 projects were managed simultaneously, among which stand out the development of the sports version of the León 4,León Cupra and Ibiza Cupra, the application of the brand ’s family feeling to the Alhambra and Arosa models and the incorporation of new Phase IV engines which are already complying with the specifications for antipollution fumes mandatory in the EU from 2005 on.

The celebration of the Technical Centre’s silver anniversary in the emblematic year 2000 coincides with another noteworthy commemoration, the 50th Anniversary of the founding of Seat. This year, the brand’s new theme "Seat auto emoción", reflects a combination of rational and emotional values, featuring both expressive design and sporty character.

Located next to the Martorell factory, the Technical Centre, like the brand itself, has been a driving force of the country’s industrial growth, and, at the same time, a key element in the progress of Seat. Seat Chairman Dr. Bernd Pischetsrieder affirms that "this centre places Seat in a unique position among all manufacturers established in Spain, since it is the only brand able to design, develop and produce its own cars".

When Seat made the decision to create its own Research and Development  (R&D) centre in 1975, there was a budding technological process in the automotive sector.

Twenty-five years later, the pencil and paper of yesterday are only used for preliminary design sketches, giving way to three dimensional, computer generated design creations. However, although the technical aids are infinitely greater, the creative sprit remains the same.

Vast amounts of hand drawn design sketches, over 170 crash tests and a million kilometres of road tests in extreme weather conditions are made every year. Virtual reality envisioned prototypes are also examples of the activities of a technical centre, whose main objective is that the Seat models come equipped with the highest standards of quality, technology and safety.

Occupying a surface area of 130,000 m2, the 40,000 m2 installations are a clear reflection of Seat’s commitment to the future, where the company has spared no expense in neither human nor technological resources in investing in R&D and adapting the production process. More than 250,000 million pesetas are earmarked for this concept in the 2000-2004 period.

More than 2,000 people, including engineers, qualified workers and technical specialists, work daily at the Technical Centre, researching for the future, designing and developing new products and adapting already existing ones. With every project, the Centre faces the challenge of revealing the keys to the future, changing current concepts and placing the future of Seat in the avant-garde of technology and design.
