BMW presents current Telematic projects at CeBIT Munich/Hanover - IT applications that have nothing to do with PCs are also becoming increasingly important. Phrases such as "mobile commerce" or "mobile Internet" are on everyone's tongues. The BMW Group is also working in this area to be able to offer its customers even more comfort and driving safety. Two technologies - which are part of the "ConnectedDrive" concept to support drivers – are being presented at CeBIT. Z9 Convertible with BMW ASSIST at Vodafone Passo - Pavilion 34 A unique combination of information technology and automobile engineering is the result of the cooperation between Vodafone Passo and the BMW Group. The BMW ASSIST service allows data to be transferred from external sources into the moving car and is the preliminary stage to mobile Internet access. This service is demonstrated using a BMW 5 series cockpit and can also be seen in the BMW Z9 concept vehicle at CeBIT in Pavilion 34 at Vodafone Passo. The exhibits show how a driver can concentrate completely on driving and does not need, for example, to enter navigational data into the system himself. Through its cooperation with Vodafone Passo, the BMW Group can access a global network and provide its customers with services across networks using the navigation system and in-car telephone. In addition, Vodafone, as a portal operator, is the BMW Group's strategic partner for the first Internet-capable series production car - the new BMW 7 Series. Inform: Wireless Online Services in the BMW X5 on the Sun Microsystems stand - Hall 21, C50 The Inform Project is a supplement to these services, and the BMW Group is presenting the results of this project for the first time at CeBIT. On the Sun Microsystems stand (Hall 21, C50), the dynamic loading of services using a Communication Administration Provider (CAP) is being demonstrated on a BMW X5 with integrated Java communication platform. Inform ("Information for the Millions") is a project operated by Mannesmann VDO, Mediamobile, Acunia, Renault, France Telecom and BMW, which is also supported by the EU Commission. It examines how a communication platform and architecture must be built up to offer maximum flexibility in the provision and personalization of information services. In addition, the service must be made available to "the millions". The rapid availability of new services, customer-oriented personalization and the configuration of the communication platform are some of the aspects which take priority here. The participants in the project have been working since the beginning of 1999 on an architecture that will allow the dynamic loading of services into the car from various service providers via a Communication Administration Provider (CAP). The services are to be available via an open, flexible, efficient Telematic infrastructure, which increases the flexibility of the service in an extremely dynamic market environment. Use of a standard is essential here, which Inform has based on Java. The results of the research project are now being demonstrated at CeBIT on the Sun Microsystems stand using a BMW X5 with integrated Java communication platform. Softlab GmbH in Hall 3 and Hall 21 The BMW subsidiary Softlab is also represented at CeBIT. The system house will be presenting solutions for the entire value creation chain on stand C30 in hall 3. As a partner of Sun Microsystems, Softlab is also presenting Virtual Product Definition (VPD) on stand C50 in hall 21, along with an expert report scenario from the product creation process in a virtual reality environment.
