GM: Palopoli Announces Retirement, Boggs Appointed GM Manufacturing Manager, Ponce Named Manager At Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant

Detroit - Frank T. Palopoli, a GM manufacturing manager for five of GM's truck assembly plants since 1992, has elected to retire after more than 31 years of distinguished service, effective April 1, 2001. Palopoli began his career at GM in 1968 for the former GMC Truck & Coach Division in Pontiac, MI. In 1977, Palopoli transferred to Vauxhall Motors in Luton, England as manager of production and material control. Palopoli returned to the U.S. in 1979. He held various positions in materials and manufacturing until 1984 when he was named plant manager at the former Pontiac West truck assembly plant. In addition, Palopoli served as plant manager at the Pontiac East truck assembly plant from 1985 to 1990 and the Flint metal fabricating center from 1990 to 1992.

William E. (Bill) Boggs, plant manager of GM's Detroit-Hamtramck car assembly plant, has been appointed GM manufacturing manager. The appointment is effective immediately. Boggs will report to Guy Briggs, GM vice president and general manager of Vehicle Manufacturing.

Boggs joined GM in June 1999 after 11 years with Ford Motor Company. During his career, Boggs has gained extensive manufacturing experience managing several assembly plants and also directing global logistics, planning, procurement and operations. His extensive manufacturing background includes experiences at Chrysler, Volkswagen, Ford and GM. Boggs received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Lincoln Memorial University in 1969 and a master's in Industrial Management from Central Michigan University in 1977.

Joseph C. (Joe) Ponce has been appointed the plant manager of GM's Detroit-Hamtramck vehicle assembly plant, succeeding Boggs, effective March 1. Ponce will transfer to the Detroit-Hamtramck plant from the GM of Canada, Windsor Transmission plant where he has served as the plant manager since 1997. Ponce began his GM career in 1973 and has held various leadership positions in engineering, manufacturing and quality. General Motors, the world's largest vehicle manufacturer, designs, builds and markets cars and trucks worldwide. It employs about 388,000 people globally. Founded in 1908, GM today sells its vehicles in about 200 countries. The company has manufacturing operations in more than 30 countries.
