PSA Peugeot Citroën, Renault and France's CNAM Agree to Jointly Invest in Land Vehicle Aerodynamics and Aeroacoustics

Jean-Martin Folz, Chairman of PSA Peugeot Citroën, Louis Schweitzer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Renault SA, and Laurence Paye-Jeanneney, Director of the CNAM, a leading French applied engineering school, announced today that they have signed articles of incorporation for Souffleries Aéroacoustiques Automobiles-S2A, a consortium that will serve as a center of excellence for automobile aerodynamics in France.

The agreement calls for the construction of two wind tunnels at the CNAM's aerotechnical institute in Saint-Cyr-l'Ecole, near Paris, by the end of 2003.

The wind tunnels will enable the French carmakers to conduct aerodynamic and aeroacoustic tests in France and will provide public and private research laboratories with a national automobile aerodynamics platform, to be called the National Technological Research Center (CNRT).

Jean-Jacques Payan will serve as chairman of the consortium's Board of Directors for the first three years. A university professor, Mr. Payan is chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Belfort-Montbeliard Technological University and was formerly director of France's National Scientific Research Center (CNRS), of higher education and research at the Education Ministry, and of research at Renault SA.

The CNRT scientific board will be chaired by Pierre Perrier, an aerodynamics expert, lifetime secretary of the Academy of Technologies, and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences.

The investment will make the consortium a European leader in land vehicle aeroacoustics. The tests will help improve vehicle safety, while reducing noise levels and carbon dioxide emissions.

This high-profile project, which represents an initial investment of FRF 210 million, will be financed two-thirds by the two carmakers and one-third by government funding from the Research Ministry, the Office of the State Secretary for Industry, the Ile-de-France regional council, and the local council of the Yvelines, the department where the wind tunnels will be located.
