Vauxhall : New Engineering Center
"This is an important facility for Vauxhall, and General Motors in Europe," said Nick Reilly. "The centre will make a significant contribution to the engineering of both current, and future, light commercial and recreational vehicles for sale in the international markets - in particular as part of our partnership on vans with Renault. Ongoing engineering work on the Frontera will take place at the new centre along with development work on the proposed new van to be built at our IBC manufacturing facility in Luton," he said.
In association with Opel's International Technical Development Centre [ITDC] in Russelsheim, strategic alliances, and manufacturing facilities across Europe, engineers at the Vauxhall Engineering Centre will work on innovative solutions to the challenges of body-shell assembly, electrical, trim and chassis issues on current and future products in the LCV and recreational sectors. They will jointly be responsible for bringing new products to market and for their ongoing engineering development and support. "The new engineering centre will be based near Bedford at the world famous Millbrook site, renowned for its comprehensive proving ground and test laboratories: it will see the consolidation of a number of current teams from across the world locating in one 'centre of expertise'. Some engineers will be relocating from Europe, and Japan, to join with the British team as soon as it is practical to start work," Mr Reilly said. The Millbrook Technology Park was considered the ideal location for the new engineering centre, where offices will be built over the next few months for the specialist teams. The Technology Park offers the opportunity for co-locating with not only the world class Millbrook facilities, but other resident engineering consultancies and service providers on the site. "As we expand our presence in the commercial vehicle sector, the new Vauxhall Engineering Centre will complement the work of Opel's International Technical Development Centre in Russelsheim - providing an additional, multi-functional, engineering resource close to the centre of manufacture for these important products," said Peter Hanenberger, Head of Opel's ITDC.
