Paula Lillard Named General Manager, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama, Inc.

Erlanger, KY. - Paula Lillard, formerly assistant general manager of human resources at Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, Inc. (TMMNA), has been chosen to head up Toyota’s newest North American manufacturing operation in Huntsville, Ala. As the general manager of administration for Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama, Inc. (TMMAL), Lillard’s responsibilities will include human resources, general affairs, corporate affairs, information systems, purchasing, and accounting and finance.

TMMAL will be the first facility outside of Japan to manufacture V8 engines for the automaker. When production begins in 2003, these engines will be used in the full size Tundra pick-up truck, manufactured in Princeton, Ind.

"I am proud to be a part of Toyota’s growth in Alabama," said Lillard. "My goals for the plant are three-fold: to create an environment that respects team members and encourages their accountability and development; to ensure customer satisfaction through quality products and timely delivery; and to partner with the local community to benefit the neighborhoods and people of Huntsville."

Lillard’s career at Toyota began in 1987 at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc., located in Georgetown, Ky., in the production control division. Since 1996, she has worked at TMMNA both in production control and human resources. Most recently, Lillard’s key management responsibilities in human resources have included development, personnel and general affairs sections.

According to Lillard, the TMMAL project is running according to schedule. Site preparation began recently. A majority of the hiring for the plant will take place closer to the start of production in late 2002 or early 2003. Interested applicants should look for advertisements in local newspapers in the future.

As a member of the newly formed Alabama Automobile Manufacturer’s Association board of directors, Lillard is looking forward to working with others in the industry to promote growth and continuous improvement of the automotive industry in Alabama.

Currently, Lillard resides in Warsaw, Ky. with her husband Gary. She has two sons, Tim and Randy Wash and two stepsons, Darin and David Lillard. Lillard will not take up residence in Alabama until after the first of the year.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama, Inc. is the latest addition to Toyota’s increasing manufacturing investment in the U.S. and Canada. By 2003, the automaker will have the capacity to build some 1.45 million cars and trucks a year, and 1.16 million engines. Toyota currently has three engine plants in North America. Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia, Inc. and Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. both machine and assemble four-cylinder and V6 engines. Also, its plant in Ontario, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Inc., assembles four-cylinder engines.

By 2003, Toyota will employ some 33,000 people throughout North America. With the Alabama project, the company’s direct investment tops $13 billion. Toyota’s North American-produced vehicles include the Camry, Avalon, Sienna, Solara, Sequoia, Corolla, Tundra, and Tacoma. The new Matrix, just unveiled at the Detroit auto show, will join the North American-built lineup in 2002, and beginning in the fall of 2003, the Lexus RX300 will also be produced here.
