General Motors Foundation Donates $1 Million To The New Detroit Science Center Money To Fund GM Motion Laboratory Exhibit DETROIT - General Motors and the GM Foundation have donated $1 million to the newly renovated Science Center, which opens its doors to the public July 28. The donation will fund the GM Motion Laboratory, an interactive exhibit within the center. "We see this as more than a financial donation. It is an opportunity to invest in our children and this city," said GM Foundation President Lorna Utley. "We are honored to have a long-term relationship with the Detroit Science Center, and look forward to working with its leaders to better our community and educate this generation and many more in the future." The donation was announced July 25 at an exclusive "sneak peek" preview party for Science Center members, where television personality Bill Nye the Science Guy was the guest of honor. Nye was joined by E. Guana and Anteater, his cartoon cohorts from the GM Environmental Science Club. The club's innovative web site, Earthtroop.com, teaches environmental stewardship and respect for the earth to young people. The GM Motion Laboratory covers 4,480 square feet and incorporates lessons from the State of Michigan's curriculum framework for science education. It has a central demonstration area and more than 30 interactive displays that demonstrate principles of motion, speed and direction. The lab also takes on aspects of the Society of Automotive Engineers' "A World in Motion" curriculum. It offers fun and educational exhibits with such features as pendulums, a flywheel, a giant V-4 engine, a wind tunnel and more. (July 26, 2001) [Homepage] [
