Johnson Controls Will Build New Plant in Mississippi to Supply Interior Systems for Future Nissan Models

Fortune 150 supplier to make automotive seats 'just-in-time' at 120,000-square-foot facility

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Automotive interior supplier Johnson Controls will build a new manufacturing plant in Canton, Mississippi to supply interior systems for three vehicles to be assembled by Nissan North America. Construction of the 120,000-square-foot facility is slated to begin in early 2002.

Beginning in the summer of 2003, the plant will supply automotive seat systems for model-year 2004 Nissan vehicles to be produced by the automaker at a new assembly facility two miles away. Nissan plans to build its first full-size pickup truck, a new minivan, and a large sport-utility vehicle at its Canton assembly plant. The automaker will receive shipments of seats -- manufactured on a "just-in-time" basis at the Johnson Controls plant -- as they are required on vehicle assembly lines.

Located approximately 30 miles north of the State Capitol of Jackson, Mississippi, Johnson Controls' new plant is targeted for the Canton Industrial Center in Madison County. When it launches production in 2003, the facility will employ approximately 300 people. It will be Johnson Controls' first automotive manufacturing plant in Mississippi.

Officials from Nissan, Johnson Controls and other suppliers formally announced their plans at a news conference in Jackson earlier this month. Tom Bobo, vice president and general manager of the Johnson Controls Nissan Business Unit - North America, represented the interior systems supplier.
