PSA
Peugeot Citroën and IBM have announced that they have combined their
expertise to develop a prototype networked automobile. The prototype is
based on Citroën's Xsara Picasso, which already features a number of
intelligent automotive applications. The prototype is a world first
presented at the Paris Auto Show.
Taking
advantage of the latest advances in mobile telephony, Internet
technology and onboard computing, PSA Peugeot Citroën and IBM are
currently conducting trials of several web-based services, including
online diagnostics, remote mechanical component checks, fleet management
tools, and a host of new driver-assistance functions such as stolen
vehicle protection…
Available
via a wide range of devices such as WAP phones, Personal Digital
Assistants, PCs, etc., remote access capability addresses the growing
need for improved driver and passenger safety.
PSA
Peugeot Citroën has pioneered progress in this field, with two
innovative technologies systematically integrated into all new vehicles:
multiplexed architecture and an interactive services package (known by
its French acronym "BSI").
This
prototype Xsara Picasso features the interactive services package,
multiplexing and a secure Internet-based telecommunications device
developed by IBM.
For
PSA Peugeot Citroën, these trials will enrich the services provided by
Egery, an Internet company created jointly by PSA Peugeot Citroën and
Vivendi to design and develop safety, mobility and comfort enhancements
for the European automotive industry. Peugeot Citroën believes that
most of its vehicles will soon benefit from the advanced services
possible because of these developments.
The
world's leading provider of e-business solutions, IBM brings extensive
technological innovation capabilities and renowned expertise in IT
systems integration, software design, electronic miniaturization and
data security based on the most advanced encryption solutions. The
system architecture and implementation are based on industry standards
and include IBM's Websphere Everyplace Suite and Java.
The
two partners are today pursuing this collaborative venture, and in early
2001 will decide whether to initiate the production engineering phase
and associated development plan.
