Jinbei GM Reaches Safety Milestone

Records 5 Million Hours Without A Lost Worktime Injury

Shenyang, China - Jinbei GM Automotive Company Limited (Jinbei GM) recently surpassed 5 million hours of construction without a lost worktime injury – an employee being hurt and forced to miss time on the job.

This is a significant milestone for the joint venture between General Motors and FAW-Jinbei Automotive Corporation. Jinbei GM was recognized earlier this month by General Motors Corporation for its safety record, which is equaled or exceeded by few other GM facilities worldwide.

Since August 1999, Jinbei GM has been renovating an existing 34,000-square-meter automaking facility. It has adopted GM's set of global practices developed and coordinated by GM's Global Health and Safety Council. These practices are used successfully by GM in North America and elsewhere.

"Jinbei GM is firmly committed to the safety of each and every person who works at our facility," said Ian Miller, president of Jinbei GM. "The attention to safety has saved us both time and money. It has enabled Jinbei GM to stay on target and even to move up our planned start of production."

"Much of the credit is due to our workers, who have had to contend with unpredictable weather and a tight schedule," Miller added. "They have fully supported and adhered to the stringent safety requirements that have been employed at Jinbei GM."

Hundreds of workers have been employed at Jinbei GM gutting the inside of the existing plant, renovating the structure, connecting utilities and installing equipment in preparation for the production of Jinbei GM's first vehicle on Dec. 15.

"Jinbei GM has set the standard for workplace safety in Shenyang," said Zhou Baizhu, director of the Shenyang Economic and Trade Commission. "We hope other companies will follow Jinbei GM's lead and strive for zero workplace accidents."

Protecting the health and safety of its employees around the world is an overriding priority for General Motors. GM is a leader among U.S. automakers and in June was selected to receive a "Significant Improvement Award" for occupational safety and health from the U.S. National Safety Council (NSC).

Jinbei GM will manufacture the Chevrolet Blazer sport-utility vehicle and Chevrolet S-10 crew cab pickup. Regular production at the Shenyang-based facility will begin in May 2001.
