First Vehicle Premieres At Jinbei GM:
Manufacturing High-Quality Chevrolet Trucks In China

Shenyang, China – A white Chevrolet Blazer DLX sport-utility vehicle engineered for China rolled off the assembly line at Jinbei GM Automotive Company Limited (Jinbei GM).

The vehicle marked the ceremonial launch of the $230 million joint venture between General Motors and FAW-Jinbei Automotive Corporation, Ltd. in Shenyang, Liaoning province.

Jinbei GM will manufacture four models of two popular General Motors vehicles: the Chevrolet Blazer and the Chevrolet S-10 crew cab pickup. Regular production will begin in May 2001.

"Jinbei GM vehicles have been configured for a variety of users in China," said Ian Miller, president of Jinbei GM. "More than 300 engineering and design changes have been made to ensure our products meet local regulations and the high demands of vehicle users."

The Chevrolet Blazer and S-10 crew cab pickup include safety technology such as antilock brakes, integrated side door beams, safety cage construction, and front and rear impact crush zones. An independent front suspension ensures solid handling and a smooth ride on rough roads. The vehicles also feature air conditioning and power steering. All Jinbei GM products will comply with China’s most stringent emissions standards.

Jinbei GM will have a manufacturing capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year. Lean manufacturing gives it the flexibility to vary the number of different models built on a daily basis. Jinbei GM will produce the number and type of vehicles demanded by the market.

"We are very optimistic about the sales potential of our vehicles," said Yang Bo, Jinbei GM vice president of marketing and distribution. "The market in China for medium-size pickups and SUVs is expected to more than double over the next 10 years, especially for trucks that are both durable and versatile."

In August, Jinbei GM began setting up a network of 11 retailers and 12 aftersales outlets in 10 cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, Chungchun, Harbin, Xiamen, Guangzhou, Shantou, Shenzhen, and Chengdu). The first facilities are expected to begin opening their doors in April 2001. Additional facilities in other Chinese cities will open in coming years.
