The Bugatti EB 16·4 "Veyron"
– a spirited, dynamic sports car design study
The Bugatti tradition of successful
racing cars is reflected in the name chosen for this design study, first shown
at the Paris Motor Show 2000: The high performance design concept, with a
16-cylinder engine, commemorates the former Bugatti factory driver, Pierre
Veyron. A Frenchman, he achieved numerous racing successes for the marque,
culminating in a spectacular victory in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1939.

The Bugatti
EB 16·4 "Veyron" is the embodiment of a modern high-performance sports
car. Its exciting appearance and sporty technology, featuring mid-engine
design, is uncompromising. It is surely the most bold of all the new era
Bugatti designs. Its sporty, future-oriented design is an indication of
the active and successful future of the marque.
The Bugatti
EB 16·4 "Veyron" design study has particularly daring styling. Hartmut
Warkuß, head of Volkswagen's "Center of Excellence Design", and his team
have successfully reinterpreted the traditional values of Bugatti and
created a sports car whose very appearance promises enormous power. The
designers have thus displayed their profound understanding of the essence
of the Bugatti marque.
Hartmut Warkuß
considers the challenge of the Bugatti legend a very special one.
The sports
car, 4380 millimetres in length and with an overall height of just 1206
millimetres, is characterised by its almost sensual lines which highlight
the dynamic body styling from every angle. Its two-coloured paintwork
– silver arrow metallic and pearlescent moonlight blue, used for the roof,
bonnet, rear, sills and front spoiler, forms a stylistic link between
the past and future of the Bugatti marque. Short body overhangs and emphatic
curves add to the impression of sheer power that the Bugatti EB 16·4 "Veyron"
design study creates.
The dynamic
design is reflected in the technical specifications of the EB 16·4 "Veyron".
This mid-engine Bugatti is powered by a 463 kW / 630 bhp, 16-cylinder
engine which is located ahead of the rear axle. The
8.0 litre, direct injection engine comprises two banks of eight cylinders.
It is also an eye-catching feature of the design study. The 16-cylinder
engine is exposed to view directly behind the two seats. It is crowned
by two striking silver-coloured air intake ducts. They give the EB 16·4
"Veyron" an outstanding accent, whereas the two round pairs of rear lights
recall classical sports car design.
The exceptional
nature of the EB 16·4 "Veyron" is continued inside, where sporty and luxurious
elements are combined to create an inspiring ambience. The design and
location of the controls recall the high technical and optical precision
of historic Bugatti racing cars.
