BMW: BMW 3 Compact 2001

Making its world debut: the BMW 316ti with VALVETRONIC for ultra-low fuel consumption

The second-generation BMW 3 Series compact once again sets new standards. With a body shortened by 21 cm, or 8.3´´, versus the saloon, with a special sports tuned suspension, a high level of equipment and the most advanced engine technology in the market, the new 3 Series compact offers a unique synthesis of sporting performance and practical qualities.

The new compact is entering the market in two engine variants:

316ti   85 kW/115 bhp four-cylinder, VALVETRONIC, four valves
per cylinder, double-VANOS, 180 Nm (133 lb-ft),
fuel consumption 6.9 litres premium (40.9 mpg Imp),
top speed 201 km/h (125 mph).

325ti   141 kW/193 bhp straight-six, four valves per cylinder,
double-VANOS, 245 Nm (181 lb-ft), fuel consumption
8.9 litres premium (31.7 mpg Imp), top speed 235 km/h (146 mph)

The 316ti is the first production car in the world to feature an engine with VALVETRONIC. This technology consistently developed by BMW provides variable intake valve lift and, accordingly, throttle-free engine load management. The result is a decrease in fuel consumption by at least 10 per cent under typical running conditions in the hands of the customer, regardless of fuel quality. With their superior performance as well as a transmission shifting smoothly and precisely, both engines offer driving pleasure at its very best.

At the same time they are quite unique versus the competition thanks to their very low fuel consumption and low running costs. Clearly, both models comply in full with the EU4 emission standard.

The new storage space package available as an option, bi-xenon headlights now featured for the first time in this class, and the first-ever introduction of VALVETRONIC technology in the 3 Series compact are just some examples proving that this is most certainly not an austerity version of the 3 Series.

On top of the wide range of sophisticated standard features, the 3 Series compact is now available with approximately 70 options, almost twice as many as on the previous model.

3 Series compact all the way: compact dimensions outside, a tailored suit inside.

Introducing the 3 Series compact as the third model variant within the 3 Series as a whole, BMW is now rounding off the current 3 Series by introducing the final model within just three years, following the saloon, coupé, touring and convertible already forming the extremely successful family of 3 Series models. Young and fresh, powerful and athletic, sophisticated and stylish these are the typical characteristics of the latest model in the range.

Through its body design alone, the 3 Series compact with its striking front and rear ends possesses unique character, but is clearly a BMW in every respect. The re-interpretation of the characteristic BMW dual head-lights gives the car an unmistakable face, round individual rear lights between a clear glass cover accentuating the individual style of the compact also from behind. Compared with the 3 Series saloon, the compact is 21 cm or 8.3´´ shorter on the same wheelbase. Compared with its predecessor, on the other hand, it is 53 millimetres or 2.1´´ longer and wider, this extra space being used in full to the benefit of the passengers and their motoring comfort.

The easy-entry function carried over from the extravagant 3 Series coupé makes entering and leaving the car much easier for the passengers at the rear, the front seat backrest tilting to the front by approximately 12o more than on the former model, the front seats moving forward in the process by approximately 90 millimetres or 3.5´´ and moving upwards at the same time.

Introducing the 3 Series compact in April 1994, BMW successfully marked out a new niche in the market, the term compact quickly becoming a synonym for the high-quality hatchback saloon in the lower midrange segment.

Roughly two out of every three of the 400,000 compact drivers previously drove another make before choosing a BMW compact, and again, roughly two out of three compact drivers opted for another BMW after experiencing the compact. This alone makes the compact one of BMW’s most successful model series in both respects. The two first new compact models are being introduced in summer 2001, when their market price will also be determined. Further engine variants including a diesel will follow before the end of the year.
