In the first quarter, despite a slight decline in the passenger car market, Golf sales totalled 35 000 units, up 0.1 percent from last year's figures. "After the launch phase in the European markets of the new Golf sales are picking up well. We are expecting continuing considerable increases in sales on the basis that the Golf is being well received by customers" said Detlef Wittig, member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management with responsibility for Sales and Marketing. The whole Volkswagen brand significantly increased its sales in March in Western Europe by 7.8 percent to 150 900 vehicles (March 2003: 139 900). In the first quarter, deliveries to customers were down by 2.2 percent from last year's level at 331 300 models (first quarter 2003: 338 600). (April 8, 2004)
