Audi's seventh record-breaking year in succession

  • Vehicle sales up by 2,1 percent

  • Record market share in Western Europe

Ingolstadt - The brand with the four-ring badge achieved record-breaking vehicle sales for the seventh year in succession in 2002. Despite the difficult overall economic situation, Audi's business performance in 2002 was characterised by rising unit sales in virtually all key markets. Audi vehicle sales worldwide increased by 2,1 percent to almost 741,700 cars. Audi exports accounted for around 67 percent of this total (2001: 65 percent).

In Western Europe, the market share is expected to reach the record-breaking level of 3.8 percent (previous year 3.6 percent). This is the highest figure that Audi has ever achieved in the history of the company. A total of 549,800 Audi cars were handed over to customers in that region (up 0.3 percent). In Germany, the company sold more than 243,600 Audi models (down 4.4 percent). The market share held up at the impressive 7.5 percent (previous year: 7.5 percent). Audi's sales volume rose by 21 percent in Great Britain to more than 65,500 units, by 6.6 percent in Italy to around 50,100 and by 0.7 percent in France to around 40,800. In Spain, more than 41,000 Audi models were sold (down 2.5 percent).

A total of approximately 85,700 Audi models were sold in the USA. This represents an increase of 2.9 percent. In Japan, the sales total soared by 42.7 percent to 11,600 vehicles. Audi sold 94,600 vehicles (up 8.9 percent) in the rest of the world last year. The company was particularly successful in China with the A6 produced locally in Changchun. Total vehicle sales in China (including Hong Kong) reached 36,500 cars (up 24.8 percent).

In addition, more than 420 Lamborghini sports cars (up 42.8 percent) and around 252,900 vehicles of other Group brands were sold by Autogerma, the Italian trading company affiliated to Audi (down 4.6 percent). Total sales by the Audi Group consequently edged up to more than 995,000 units (up 0.4 percent).
