Ford Gives 2001 World Excellence Awards To 42 Global Suppliers

DEARBORN, Michigan - Ford Motor Company last night awarded its highest supplier recognition - the World Excellence Award - to 42 suppliers for their superior performance in 2001.

In a ceremony at the Ford Motor Company Conference and Events Center here, the awards were presented for the fourth year. About 200 of Ford's largest production and non-production suppliers attended the event that had a "back to basics" theme. Keynote speaker was Nick Scheele, Ford's chief operating officer and president, who talked about the important role suppliers' play in the company's focus on making high quality cars and trucks.

The World Excellence Award provides annual recognition based on quality, cost and delivery metrics jointly developed by Ford and its suppliers. Forty-two suppliers from 15 countries won awards in various categories.

"Back to basics is about designing, building and selling great cars and trucks, and we can't do that without our most valuable partners - our suppliers," said Carlos Mazzorin, Ford group vice president of Asia Pacific Operations, South American Operations and Global Purchasing. "We rely on our suppliers to help us build quality into our vehicles."

There are three types of World Excellence Awards.

The Gold Award is given to suppliers that excel in all three areas; nine suppliers won the Gold Award.

The Silver Award is given to suppliers that stand out in quality and delivery or quality and cost; 21 suppliers won the Silver award.

A final category - Recognition of Achievement - is given to suppliers who impact customer satisfaction by leading Ford's key initiatives: Environmental Leadership, High Mileage Improvement, Consumer Driven 6-Sigma and Warranty Reduction. Recognition of Achievement awards were given to 12 suppliers.

Environmental Leadership recognition goes to suppliers that have achieved ISO 14001 requirements at a majority of their plants and have demonstrated environmental achievement and innovation in reducing the environmental impact of Ford products. They also are on the forefront of achieving vehicle recyclability requirements. Overall, they show environmental leadership by consistently taking environmental actions when conducting business. Winners this year are Denso Corporation, INA-Schaeffler KG and Lear Corporation.

High Mileage refers to successful completion of a project promoting high-mileage vehicles. Warranty Reduction requires the supplier be actively involved in the warranty sharing program, and Consumer Driven 6-Sigma (a new category) recognition goes to suppliers that had a black belt lead a project that had a direct impact on Ford customer satisfaction.
