of April 17, 2002 Ford's Norfolk Assembly Plant Builds 7-Millionth Vehicle And Marks 77th Anniversary F-150 Photo: Ford NORFOLK, VA - Ford Motor Company's Norfolk Assembly Plant produced its seven-millionth vehicle here today - a 2002 F-150 pickup truck. "This seven-millionth unit highlights 77 years of quality production here, and we're proud of that accomplishment," said Plant Manager Mike Hom. "As a long-time business partner of the Norfolk community, we are extremely pleased with the local and state support we have received through the years." The milestone truck was driven off the final assembly line by Mike Hom. He was joined by Jessie Brown, chairman of UAW Local 919; Paul Fraim, mayor of Norfolk; and Virginia Delegate Jerrauld Jones. The City of Norfolk commemorated the event by installing a Bronze Cornerstone at the Body Shop expansion of Norfolk Assembly. Last year, Ford Motor Company announced a $375-million investment at the Norfolk facility to expand the current body shop by 350,000 square feet. The F-Series pickup recently celebrated its 25th anniversary as the best-selling truck in America and 20th anniversary as the best-selling vehicle overall. The Norfolk Assembly Plant, which employs approximately 2,400 women and men, began operations in 1925 building Model T cars. The first car to roll off the line was purchased by the City of Norfolk. The plant built both cars and trucks until 1974, when it switched to total truck production. (April 10, 2002) [Homepage] [
