BMW GROUP Celebrates Record First Quarter In U.S.

Year-to-Date Sales up 16.3 Percent While March Sales Jump 19 Percent - First MINI Sales Reported As MINI Returns to U.S. Market

WOODCLIFF LAKE, NEW JERSEY - BMW Group (BMW and MINI brands combined) reported record first quarter sales of 54,392 vehicles, an increase of 16.3 percent over the 46,764 vehicles sold the first three months of 2001. March sales were phenomenal, too, with 20,513 vehicles reported, a jump of 19 percent over the 17,300 vehicles reported last March.

BMW Brand

BMW of North America, LLC reported a record first quarter, with year-to-date sales of 53,605, up 14.6 percent compared to 46,764 vehicles sold in the first three months of 2001. Monthly sales were up 14 percent, too, to 19,726, up from 17,300 over March 2001. It was the best March ever for the BMW brand in the U.S.

Automobile Sales

BMW also reported March automobile sales of 16,066 compared to 13,649 a year ago, an increase of 17.7 percent. The company also reported year-to-date automobile sales of 43,609 automobiles, a jump of more than 17 percent compared to 37,211 in March 2001.

Sales of BMW's new 2002 7 Series nearly doubled this past month as the company reported 1,683 sales compared to 863 sold in March 2001, a 95 percent increase.

Sports Activity Vehicle Sales

Year-to-date sales of BMW's X5 Sports Activity Vehicles increased 4.6 percent, with 9,996 vehicles reported compared to 9,553 in the first quarter 2001. March SAV sales were up, too, to 3,660 vehicles compared to the 3,651 reported last year.

Certified Pre-owned Vehicles Sales

The company also reported sales of 4,986 Certified Pre-owned BMWs in March, up 45 percent compared to the 3,437 units sold in March 2001. The March performance was the best month ever in the Certified Pre-owned sector, eclipsing the previous monthly record of 4,318 sales set in May of 2000. Year-to-date, BMW has sold 12,407 CPO vehicles, 31 percent ahead of the 9,458 units sold during the same period last year.

MINI Brand

MINI automobiles went on sale March 22, marking the return of the MINI brand to the US for the first time in 35 years.

The company reported sales of 716 MINI Coopers and 71 MINI Cooper S' in the nine trading days in March. Availability of the MINI Cooper S will increase as production ramps up in the coming weeks.
