Stuttgart - Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has established a long-term partnership with the Finnish company, Valmet Automotive Inc., based in Uusikaupunki. Valmet has been producing vehicles for the Boxster model range on behalf of Porsche since 1997. The original contract is due to run until 2004; this includes a clause whereby Porsche has the option to extend the contract for one year. Both parties have just signed a follow-on contract which covers the further production of Boxster vehicles and expires in 2008 with an option of extending the partnership until 2011.

The Boxster was introduced in 1996 as the second model range alongside the 911. From the start of production the mid-engine roadster enjoyed demand in excess of expectations. At the time Porsche AG was hovering on the limit of its technical capabilites with at least 30,000 units driving off the production line at their plant in Zuffenhausen and were struggling to deliver vehicles to their customers within the usual delivery period. The company consequently decided to establish an additional production centre for the Boxster in Finland. At that crucial point, Valmet Automotive was the only company in a position to be ready for production at a few months notice and to satisfy Porsche's demand for a high standard of quality.

Of a total of 111,256 Boxster models produced since then, 61,504 - that is, more than half - have been produced by Valmet Automotive in Uusikaupunki under strict quality control monitoring by Porsche. In the last Porsche financial year 2000/01 (31st July) alone, 23,294 units were assembled here out of a total of 28,457 Boxster and Boxster S models. Along with assembly, Valmet Automotive has specialised in the body shell, painting and finish. The complete engine for the Boxsters assembled in Finland is manufactured in Zuffenhausen and delivered to Valmet. Subassemblies also come directly from the Stuttgart site. Porsche's reliable suppliers, of which almost 90 percent are situated in Germany, provide all other parts and components required for production of the Boxster, including the pressed parts.
