Volkswagen announces a powerful new passenger-car diesel engine
Golf TDI Photo: VW To celebrate the 25th anniversary of its first passenger-car diesel, Volkswagen presented its new 230 kW (313 bhp) diesel engine in Wolfsburg for the first time today. This 10-cylinder TDI unit is the world's most powerful passenger-car diesel engine. It uses the pump-injector fuel supply principle and combines modern weight-saving design principles with immense power. The crankcase of this 5.0-litre engine is made of aluminium, and the maximum torque is quoted as 750 Newton-metres. Next year this new compression-ignition engine will be offered for sale in Volkswagen's large luxury saloon model and sport utility vehicle, and should provide both with quite exceptional performance. The torque figures achieved with the aid of modern fuel injection naturally call for something special in the transmission area. For this reason Volkswagen has also developed a new generation of transmissions and matching all-wheel-drive assemblies. The new units utilise various forms of exhaust mission control equipment developed by Volkswagen. Future pollution limits will be met by a combination of internal engine design measures and exhaust gas after-treatment. The most economical Volkswagen of all, the 'three-litre' Lupo 3L TDI, has since 1999 been the only diesel to comply with the D4 exhaust emission limits, but soon similar claims will be possible for other engines too: the latest Golf TDI with 74 kW engine and front-wheel drive will from June onwards be the second diesel engine to match this exacting emission control standard - and will also allow its purchasers to claim 1,200 German Marks of tax relief. A quarter of a century ago, Volkswagen began series production of diesel-engined passenger cars. The first Golf Diesel, which developed 37 kW (50 bhp), was the starting signal for the compression-ignition's triumphal progress since then. Volkswagen has remained in the forefront of modern diesel engine development and has established new trends regularly: from the first turbocharged unit to the introduction of TDI technology and high-pressure fuel injection. Today's modern Volkswagen TDI engines with pump-injector fuel supply are economical, dynamic and at the leading edge of diesel technology. The top model at the moment is the 1.9 TDI, available in the Golf and Bora: it is sold with a peak power output of up to 110 kW (150 bhp). (May 11, 2001) [Homepage] [
