Škoda Auto´s worldwide sales 6 % higher in 1999

Worldwide sales grew 6 % to 385,330
The largest number of cars, 192,156 was sold in Western Europe
With 56,270 cars sold, Germany is the chief export market (+ 25.8 %)

For the fifth time in an uninterrupted series, Škoda Auto sales grew worldwide by 6 % to a total of 385,330 in 1999. The demanding markets of Western Europe continue to be the most important sales region, 192,156 cars having been sold last year, i.e. 11.7 % more than last year. Central Europe (without Czech Rep.) likewise recorded an important sales improvement of 19.4 %, sales totalling 90,479 cars. 80,3 % of total production was exported. The Czech market recorded a decrease of 7.1 % to 75,952, Škoda´s market share in Czech Republic decreased to 49.6 %.

Germany continues to be the most important export market, where Škoda sold 56,270 cars in 1999, a rise of 25.8 % over 1998. With a sales growth of 33.7 % to 44,457 cars, Poland is the second most important market. Slovakia recorded a slight sales decrease of 2.4 %, as due to the economic recession only 31,451 customers bought Škoda cars. Škoda´s market share in Slovakia reached 53.97 %, which is a relative increase of 20.8 % over last year (1998: market share 44.69 %). Among other markets, sales grew 5.2 % in the UK, where Škoda sold 23,145 cars in 1999.

There was a sales decrease in the Russian market, where the crisis is still very strong. 1,879 cars were sold, 74,5 % less than last year. The consequences of the conflicts in former Yugoslavia led to a similar decrease of sales, 36,8 % Škoda cars less, i.e. 1,670 were sold.

Škoda´s new automobile market share in Western Europe reached 1.21 % last year, which is a proportional improvement of more than 7 % over the previous year. Škoda cars sold well in Austria, where the market share improved to 4,84 % in 1999. Škoda was similarly successful in e.g. Denmark, where Škoda´s market share is 4.68 %. In Germany the market share of 1.45 % confirms that Škoda cars are increasingly popular in this most exacting market of Europe.

Most important for Skoda´s market success last year was the Felicia hatchback model, of which 163,547 were sold all over the world. The model range Octavia (saloon as well as estate) was likewise very well accepted by customers and 143,251 cars were sold. The new model Fabia was available in limited numbers last year, and was bought by 823 customers. (Jan. 22, 2000)
