DaimlerChrysler: 2001 Jeep Cherokee
"We have a unique opportunity to continue production of the current Cherokee while we ready a new plant for production of a future Jeep model." For the 2000 model year, Cherokee was given a thoroughly reengineered powertrain option. First introduced in the all-new 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the redesigned 4.0-liter PowerTech in-line six-cylinder engine is more refined, cleaner and quieter than the previous version. The engine delivers 193 hp (144 kW) and 231 lb.-ft. (313 Nm) coupled with a five-speed manual transmission, also new for 2000. A four-speed automatic transmission is standard on the Classic and Limited versions, optional on the SE and Sport. This engine complies with U.S. low emission vehicle (LEV) requirements. Cherokee offers standard child seat tether anchorages for 2001. These anchor points in the upper roof structure add another level of safety for child seats. Other safety features standard on Cherokee include next-generation air bags*, self-adjusting low-tension three-point seat belts and height-adjustable shoulder belts. * Certified to the federal regulations that allow less forceful air bags. Always use seat belts. Remember, a back seat is the safest place for children. The new Steel Blue Pearl Coat exterior color will be offered on Cherokee's full line for 2001 with late availability. Cherokee is offered in SE, Sport, Classic and Limited models. For the first quarter of 2000, total US Cherokee sales are up 8 percent over 1999. In 1999, total US Cherokee sales were 165,261, up 13 percent over 1998 figures. All pictures: Chrysler
