Volkswagen : The new high end D1

The design study for a great Volkswagen: D1

Wolfsburg, September 14, 1999 - Volkswagen will present at the Frankfurt Motor Show a interpretation of the luxury saloon of the future: the design study "Concept D" embodies luxury in the shape of a four-door coupé. "Concept D" conveys an image of control and modernity; it combines elegance with a clear and functional design. Volkswagen's new design offers a redefinition of the luxury class theme. The study sets new standards in emotion and functionality as well as in design and technology. It represents a first taste of the luxury saloon that will be built in the transparent factory in the centre of Dresden, the capital of the state of Saxony, from the beginning of the next millennium.

With this addition to its range, Volkswagen is aiming to attract traditional business customers and buyers of sporting luxury cars. A review of the engine already demonstrates the technical superiority of "Concept D". The striking lines of the bonnet conceal an engine, which is without equal among luxury class vehicles: a V10 direct injection diesel. The boosted engine boasts an impressive set of performance data as well as a range of innovative features.

The two five cylinder banks at an angle of 90 degrees have a total swept volume of 5.0 litres. The high-pressure unit injector system in combination with a biturbo unit, charge air cooling and electrical charge pressure control enables an output of 230 kW / 313 bhp at 4000 rpm.

Even more impressive is the maximum torque of 750 Newton metres at only 2000 rpm. Thanks to the integrated control and ancillary unit drive, the construction of the power plant is very compact and it has excellent refinement thanks to a balancer shaft, which minimizes free mass forces.

The V10 TDI power plant drives all four wheels via a modern automatic gearbox with Tiptronic. The 19-inch alloy wheels with 255/40 R19 tyres ensure good road contact. A range of engines including the W12 unit is under consideration.

The design team headed by the Volkswagen Group's chief designer, Hartmut Warkuß, have successfully married the themes of sport and luxury in this 4995 millimeters long and 1874 mm wide four-door study without resorting to familiar solutions and common shapes. The front end is powerful and striking with its "floating" double xenon headlights in offset position and novel fluorescent tube turn signals combined behind tapered clear glass covers. With the lines of the bonnet converging on the radiator grille, the front emphasizes the vehicle's impression of elegantly and dynamically packaged power.

The fluid lines of the arched 1440 millimeters high roof complete the unconventional silhouette of a four-door coupé. The fine chrome strips used on the radiator grille, window surrounds and side panel strips underpin the quality and elegance of this design study with its "Du Pont" blue paint finish. The excellent finish right down to the last details of the exterior and the interior design is extremely impressive. The door handles are virtually flush with their panels and they deploy automatically - triggered by a heat sensor - when a person's hand comes within a few centimeters distance. The side turn signals, also using fluorescent tubes, are located in the exterior mirrors.

The interior of the four-seater study demonstrates a new understanding of the concept of luxury through the use of high-quality materials such as leather, alcantara, walnut and aluminum. The electrically adjustable seats and the lower sections of the doors and the dash panel are lined with finest beige nappa leather, the roof lining is in alcantara of the same color and the footwells are lined with beige velour. The upper sections are in dark blue nappa leather. A subtle aluminium strip extending along the entire length of the cockpit and continuing along the doors breaks up the surfaces. In the central console, which accommodates an analogue clock, function switches and vents, there is also a multi-function display for operation of the air conditioner, stereo system, navigation system and the reversing camera, which is integrated into the VW symbol on the boot lid.

The  classic round instruments and all switches are illuminated in blue. The leather-lined wooden steering wheel has multi-function switches to operate the radio-navigation system, telephone and cruise control system. Modules located in the headliner above the front and rear seats contain individual lighting and microphones for the hands-free telephone system and are connected by a light bar.
