The new Polo - Beyond class - the new benchmark

A new dimension: Fourth generation Polo to be launched mid-November Polo sets new standards in technology, quality and design

Wolfsburg. In mid-November, Volkswagen will launch a new generation of the Polo on the German market. With its innovative technologies, striking design and dimensions, the fully galvanised bestseller (more than seven million Polos have been sold around the world) sets new standards. And what's more: it occupies a segment of its own - the "Polo class". Clearly larger dimensions (e.g. 154 mm longer, wheelbase extended by 53 mm) and a maximum level of quality, safety and comfort make the inimitable Polo the quality benchmark, uncompromisingly embodying the claim of a premium brand.

In its design, the new Volkswagen Polo meets all the needs both of a fully fledged family car and of a quality urban car. For the launch, the Polo will be available with a 3-cylinder and a 4-cylinder petrol engine (47 kW/65 bhp and 55 kW/75 bhp) and with a 3-cylinder TDI (55 kW/75 bhp). The 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine is a completely new development. It is economical, low in emissions (EU-4 standard) and extremely comfortable thanks to the incorporation of a balancer shaft. By January 2002, five more engines will be introduced in turn. These include the new 4-cylinder direct injection petrol engine (FSI) generating 63 kW/85 bhp, and another 3-cylinder unit with 40 kW/55 bhp.

The range of equipment options has also been tailored to meet the requirements of the different customers. The four equipment versions 'Basis', 'Trendline', 'Comfortline' and 'Highline', two body versions (2- and 4-door) and an automatic version form the basic framework.

All Polo models are equipped as standard with ABS, electro-hydraulic power steering, driver and front-passenger airbags, side airbags, four head restraints, heat-reflective glass and rev counter,

to name but a handful of features. Moreover, numerous items of optional equipment enhance both comfort and safety. In conjunction with the electronic stability program (ESP), Volkswagen is offering a hydraulic brake assistant (HBA), which increases brake pressure and thus reduces braking distance in an emergency - the first time such a system has been made available in the Polo.

Comfort is increased by the new Climatic, a semi-automatic air conditioning system which automatically regulates the interior temperature (only the air distribution is controlled manually). A new type of air conditioning compressor allows the Climatic - and the fully automatic Climatronic, which is also available - to use noticeably less fuel than conventional systems. It is also possible to deactivate the front-passenger airbag if a child seat is to be fitted in the front when small children are travelling in the car. Moreover, for the first time in this competitive environment, an integrated child seat is available as an optional extra for the rear bench seat. This makes the exercise of belting small children in much easier than with a conventional mobile child seat.

However, the development team didn't stop at advancing the Polo's technology into the 21st century - the new design also reflects the brand's progressive philosophy. For example: the four round headlights integrated flush in the front section of the vehicle link Volkswagen's traditional functionality with a prominent degree of sympathetic emotionality.

The design of the 2-door and 4-door models was strictly separated: the 2-door version is rather sporty, reminiscent of a coupé, while the 4-door Polo, with its new, integrated third side window highlights the more generous dimensions of the series. The development team also designed the interior of the new series to be spacious and particularly sophisticated. The innovative design, a quality of materials unrivalled in this price range and boldly symmetric lines demonstrate yet again: as the pioneer of a new generation of modern compact cars with all the safety and comfort features of a much larger vehicle, this Polo crosses the anachronistic boundaries of class.
