Mazda Motor Logistics Europe implements Quality Management System

Leverkusen - At a ceremony in Willebroek, Belgium last week, Mazda Motor Logistics Europe (MLE) announced the successful certification of its business processes in line with ISO 9001:2000, setting a new standard of quality management within the Mazda European logistics, warehousing and parts and accessories organisation. Attending the presentation were Dan Morris, President and CEO of Mazda Motor Europe, Jorgen Olesen, Vice President Customer Service and Logistics, and Chief Executive of the British Vehicle Certification Agency, Paul Markwick.

ISO Certification has been common practice for the manufacturing industry since the 90s, but is still relatively new for service areas such as stock-keeping, marketing and sales. Certification was successfully completed in 16 months at MLE and has resulted in the adoption of a Quality Management System that realizes time and cost savings, optimizes operating efficiency and achieves an even stronger level of customer orientation.

The process began with the appointment of 18 Quality Coordinators from within the MLE organization who, along with their colleagues and a team of experts from Mazda's European Headquarters, defined and documented all main business processes and introduced measures for improvement. These included, among other steps, improving interfaces between departments within the MLE organization, identifying Best Practices using a sophisticated scorecard system, and creating an intranet website. This was possible by consistent adherence to ISO 9001:2000 guidelines and the implementation of Key Performance Indicators, Quality Audits and other process control instruments. With this Quality Management System now in place and externally certified, the 18 Quality Managers will continue to oversee the continuity and development of the system in their area of activity to insure that MLE continues to meet strict ISO 9001:2000 quality standards each year.

In accepting the certification, Dan Morris said, "Our aim is to be the top performer in customer satisfaction. We are already among the top performers in the automobile industry in Europe and are aiming for the number one position. This has only been possible through the establishment and permanent advancement of a quality system that attains the highest standards. Especially in regards to the above average growth, such a system is essential. MLE has achieved a major milestone with its ISO 9001:2000 certification - a considerable achievement for the whole organisation. In successful Quality Management we are seeing an important securing of our future.''
