Dr. Kathleen C. Taylor named Chair of the Board of Directors of the Centre for Automotive Materials and Manufacturing

Oshawa, Ontario - Dr. Kathleen C. Taylor, Chief Scientist for General Motors of Canada, has been named Chair of the Board of Directors for the Centre for Automotive Materials and Manufacturing (CAMM.) The one year appointment took effect on January 1, 2002.

In 1998, Queen's University, with its founding partner, Alcan International Limited, with support from the Ontario Research Development Challenge Fund (ORDCF), established CAMM in Kingston, Ont. in the university's Faculty of Applied Science. McMaster University became a CAMM university partner with additional support from ORDCF in June, 2000. CAMM's mandate is to enhance the competitiveness of the automotive sector in Ontario through advanced research and development and education programs.

Dr. Gian Frontini, outgoing Chair of the CAMM Board of Directors, said that, "The three years since CAMM's founding have been dedicated to the creation and consolidation of automotive related research capabilities based on the professional skills of the participating universities. Over the next year CAMM's portfolio of research projects will be refined and focused, in specific areas of special value to our industrial partners. Kathy Taylor's industrial technology management experience and leadership makes her uniquely qualified to lead this new phase of the Centre for Automotive Materials and Manufacturing."

Dr. Taylor said that, "I am greatly looking forward to the year ahead. The Centre for Automotive Materials and Manufacturing provides leadership and a framework to transform university research and education into opportunities for the automotive sector."

She said that, "I share CAMM's dedication to the advancement of research and education in materials and manufacturing for the automotive industry. I expect it to be a busy 12 months."

Dr. Taylor, who joined GM in 1970 and became Chief Scientist at GM of Canada in August, 2000, has an outstanding record as a researcher and has received numerous awards, honours and fellowships. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, she is the author or co-author of over 20 publications and patents. Dr. Taylor was educated at Rutgers and earned her Ph.D. at Northwestern University.
