GM Announces Executive Appointments

Detroit - Two leadership appointments were announced General Motors by Bill Lovejoy, group vice president of Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing (VSSM).

Douglas Herberger

Effective February 1, 2002, Douglas Herberger, VSSM general manager - Western Region is promoted to the position of GM North America vice president and general manager of Service and Parts Operations (SPO). Herberger succeeds John F. Smith who was recently appointed to the position of GM vice president and general manager - field sales, service and parts for VSSM. He will report to Lovejoy.

In his new role, Herberger will be responsible for leading SPO's team in achieving its business goals: targeting fourth consecutive year of record earnings, double digit growth in accessory business, growth in Goodwrench service initiatives and growth in the ACDelco all-makes business.

Herberger has held a variety of assignments in General Motors including president and managing director of GM Japan and a member of the Asia Pacific strategy board, general director of finance at SPO, and director of planning for the Automotive Components Group, now known as Delphi. In 1973 he graduated from St. Bonaventure University in New York with a bachelor's degree in finance and in 1993 received a master of business administration degree from Michigan State University.

Replacing Herberger will be Michael Jackson, currently VSSM executive director of sales support. Jackson joined GM in February 2000 following a series of key leadership positions in sales and marketing at Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, Kraft/General Foods and Coors. In 1978 he received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Kent State University in Ohio and a master's degree in communications from the University of Southern California in 1981. He also completed the Wharton executive development program in 1993.

In his new role, Jackson will lead the GM Western Regional team in its efforts to increase focus on sales leadership and improving dealer relations.

GM's Western Region employs approximately 700 people and is responsible for marketing and sales initiatives in 16 states where nearly 1,800 GM dealers are located.
