Moray Callum To Lead Mazda Design Revitalization
Welcoming Callum to the Mazda team, Phil Martens Managing Director in Charge of Product Strategy, Design, and Product Development said: “Strengthening Mazda design is a key part of our overall product strategy and is essential to our core brand attribute of stylish and insightful design. Moray Callum brings a world-class track record as a designer. He will be an excellent addition to the Mazda Design team and will further broaden our ‘Emotion in Motion’ design philosophy in the exciting range of products we have in the pipeline.” Mazda has made a number of key design personnel additions, creating a team with extensive global experience. These include the appointment of several new chief designers including Tsutomu “Tom” Matano as their leader, as well as a Deputy General Manager, K Hayashi. Moray Callum will head up a consolidated Mazda design division reporting to Phil Martens. His appointment at Mazda also bolsters the bench strength of Ford Motor Company’s design team. “Moray Callum rounds out a ‘world-beating’ design team that will create for customers a variety of outstanding cars, trucks and SUVs in the years ahead,” said J Mays, Ford Motor Company vice president of Design. “One of his strengths is understanding – and bringing to life – what people truly want to see in their vehicle, regardless of what corner of the world they call home. Some of that is instinctive, and the rest comes from years of working around the globe.” Callum's career in car design started in 1982. After six years with first Chrysler UK then Peugeot-Citroen PSA, working on both passenger and commercial vehicles, he joined Ghia Spa. as a consultant designer. His work included the Ghia Via concept vehicle in 1989, leading Ghia's design consultancy to Jaguar, and the Aston Martin Lagonda Vignale. With Ford since 1995, he most recently held the position of Chief Designer, Ford North American Operations, responsible for lifestyle vehicles such as Ford Windstar/Mercury Villager, as well as Super Duty pick-ups, Ford Excursion and Ford EX concept. Born in 1958, Callum graduated from Napier University, Edinburgh with a bachelor of science degree in Industrial Design. He also holds a masters in Transportation Design from the Royal College of Art, London. (Sept. 7, 2001) [Homepage] [
