Ford Donates $10 Million to Northwestern University for New Engineering Design Center

EVANSTON, Illinois - Ford Motor Company announced its donation of $10 million to Northwestern University and the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science for construction of a new engineering design center on the Evanston campus. The announcement was made as part of the festivities of Ford Engineering Week being held May 15 - 19.

The donation will create the Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center, a 63,000 square foot facility to be located at the gateway to Northwestern's science and engineering corridor. Construction is scheduled to start in late 2002, with occupancy in fall 2004.

The state-of-the-art facility, where engineering students will experience a "culture of design," will include classrooms, shops, design studios, meeting areas and work rooms especially designed for team learning, collaborative projects and computer-assisted learning.

"Ford and Northwestern have enjoyed a long and productive relationship over the years and we are very pleased and enthusiastic about this opportunity to contribute to the new Engineering Design Center," said Richard Parry-Jones, Group Vice President - Global Product Development and Quality in presenting the $10 million gift to Northwestern University President Henry S. Bienen. "The construction of this new Center further enhances the effectiveness of Northwestern's already impressive undergraduate engineering program."

Ford earlier this year made a $3 million gift to Northwestern to establish the Ford Motor Company Center for Global Citizenship at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management. That new center will bring together the academic disciplines of management and organizations, accounting, strategic change and leadership to focus on environmental, ethics and social responsibility issues.

The Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center will also support a Scholars program for selected incoming freshmen; an undergraduate research awards program for sophomore engineering students and their faculty mentors; funding for senior year capstone course advanced-level design challenge projects; the development of instructional technology videos and teaching modules to enhance the core competencies for freshmen and sophomores; Northwestern's continued involvement in the Sunrayce program, which allows an undergraduate team to conceptualize and design a solar-powered automobile over an 18-month period and compete in national races; and sponsorship of Ford Engineering Week to be held annually at Northwestern.

The McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science has 1,400 undergraduates and 992 graduate students in a variety of disciplines, ranging from materials science to industrial engineering. The school has nine departments with 155 full-time faculty and 19 research centers and institutes. McCormick's first-year curriculum, Engineering First, engages students in engineering, design and communication beginning their freshman year. The school is housed in the Technological Institute, which features more than 750,000 square feet of recently renovated educational and research facilities.
