DaimlerChrysler Launches Berlin Seminar

  • International meeting of leading representatives from industry and science
  • The focus is on issues important to the future—this year "lifelong learning"
  • Günther Fleig, DaimlerChrysler Board of Management member responsible for Human Resources: "Berlin will develop into a hub for the dialog between science and corporate practice."

Stuttgart – DaimlerChrysler is today launching a new initiative in the German capital in the form of the "Berlin Seminar." Every two years, top representatives of international companies will meet there with leading scientists from around the world. The goal is to discuss topics of great importance for the future development of companies and society. To that end, approximately 50 human resources directors and scientists from internationally renowned universities have come to Berlin this year. The two-day meeting provides them with the opportunity to network and share their knowledge of and experiences with "lifelong learning."

Günther Fleig, DaimlerChrysler Board of Management member responsible for Human Resources, comments: "As a discussion forum, the Berlin Seminar will develop into an international hub for the dialogue between science and corporate practice. With this year’s focus on lifelong learning, we are addressing an issue which is of great importance for business and society in terms of social responsibility".

The basic purpose of the Berlin Seminar is to enable an international exchange of ideas regarding global corporate and sociopolitical questions. The discussion forum, which will be personally hosted by a member of the DaimlerChrysler Board of Management every two years, will take place in the German capital to promote Berlin in its role as a vibrant metropolis and center of intellectual and social life. Günther Fleig says: "The Berlin Seminar underlines the international significance of Berlin as a center of expertise for issues of the future. For DaimlerChrysler, the development of innovative solutions and new approaches has traditionally had a high status. We want to extend this pioneering function even further in the future."

This year's topic, "Lifelong Learning—Navigating Corporations into the Age of the Incomplete Mind," makes clear the great challenge for companies in the face of a distinct process of social change. Innovative knowledge generation and professional knowledge management are becoming central success factors of the 21st century. The structure of the event will probably be unlike that of any such event in the past: In place of a lecture marathon, the participants will work in small groups on selected special topics.

DaimlerChrysler will extend invitations to the capital in the years between the main events as well: Top newcomers who have been designated by leading managers and academic professionals will meet to discuss and build on the results from current points of view—in complete accordance with the spirit of "lifelong learning."
