Agreement Reached At Vauxhall

Luton, UK - Vauxhall Motors and its recognised trade unions, have reached agreement, March 7th 2001, on the UK manufacturing restructuring announced in December last year. This follows on from an understanding reached between Vauxhall management, General Motors Europe and the European Employee Forum earlier this week.

The agreement has all parties support for the continuation of vehicle production at the ongoing site in Luton, which will concentrate on commercial and recreational vehicles, and added investment in Ellesmere Port. This will maintain a strong manufacturing presence for Vauxhall in the UK.

Vauxhall management will continue to take all reasonable steps to avoid any compulsory redundancies as a result of the restructuring and is hopeful of achieving this aim. They have also reaffirmed their undertaking to pursue new business opportunities in the UK.

Nick Reilly, chairman and managing director of Vauxhall Motors, said: "This agreement is a positive step forward for everyone involved. We can now look to the future assured of a strong, restructured, manufacturing base here in the UK, and can focus our attention on implementing the recent decisions. This means assuring world-class standards of efficiency and quality across all areas of our business. We will build on the strengths of an excellent product range and, by working together, I am confident that Vauxhall will continue to compete very strongly in the future European automotive industry."
