The investment will be used to construct new body shop and
general assembly areas. The project also includes a significant enhancement to the plant's
paint operation. In addition, GM is planning to construct a new metal stamping facility
contiguous with the assembly plant. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first half
of 2000. "This project represents GM's strategy to strengthen truck production,
improve manufacturing capabilities and continue to offer customers high quality truck
products," said Guy Briggs, GM vice president and general manager of the GM Truck
Group. "This investment is an important step for the future of our Shreveport plant,
the men and women who work there and GM overall."
For competitive reasons, GM is not releasing information on the specific products to be
built at the Shreveport plant. Shreveport Truck Assembly currently builds the Chevy S-10
and GMC Sonoma pickups.
Most of the new construction will take place on land immediately adjacent to the
existing facility, allowing the plant to continue building its current products without
interruption.
The plant currently has approximately 2,500 hourly employees represented by UAW Local
2166 and 210 salaried employees. The plant has built approximately 200,000 pickups so far
this year.
