Chrysler starts production of all-new 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Chrysler Coroporation, Auburn Hills, MI,  July 17, 1998 -- Chrysler is going to start production of the all-new 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee at Jefferson North Assembly Plant. The old plant with a 83-year history and already 8.3 Mill. cars built is going to a new dedication.

• Spending $ 750 Mill. investment for expansion

• Capacity increase from 170,000 in 1992 to 350,000.

• Workforce from 2,100 in 1992 to 4,300

Chrysler is going to produce up to 350,000 cars in its renovated Jefferson North Assembly plant. From a former to shift worktime model they will run now in three shifts.

The three year expansion added 80,000 square feet to the facility, which was used to build up and test the new facilities prior to launch. The launch itself took place in 3 weeks. Pilot and pre-production were done in Jefferson North.
