Volkswagen reports record sales in North America; best result ever in 17 years AUBURN HILLS, Mich.-Firmly establishing itself again as the number-one selling European importer in the U.S., Volkswagen of America, Inc. today reported its best annual sales results in 17 years. In 1998, Volkswagen sold 219,679 new cars in the U.S., up 59.3 percent over 1997. It was the best Volkswagen total in the U.S. since 1981 when the German automaker sold 278,513. In December, Volkswagen sales were 17,950, an increase of 48.2 percent over the same month in 1997 when sales were 12,116. This marks the best December for Volkswagen in the U.S. since 1981. Among Volkswagen's many sales highlights was the overwhelming success of the New Beetle-the recent recipient of the 1999 North American Car of the Year. Volkswagen sold 7,516 New Beetles in December, making it the second-best sales month of the year - a year that began with its market introduction in March. For the year, 55,842 New Beetles were sold. Volkswagen's 1998 sales were again led by its top-selling Jetta model with a total sales mark of 89,311, the third best in the model's 19-year history. In the important midsize segment, Volkswagen's Passat model posted an all-time record with sales of 39,272, an increase of 164 percent over 1997's mark of 14,868. Another record for 1998 was set by the Volkswagen Cabrio, with a total annual mark of 15,230, a 59.7 percent increase over 1997's 9,538 and the best in this model's history that began in 1980.
