The Technocentre: A Vital Resource For The Future Of Renault

Exclusively devoted to product development for the company, the Technocentre allows Renault to work better and faster, while saving at least one billion francs per new vehicle programme.

Since 1988, to achieve its principal objective of competitiveness based on quality, shorter development times and reduced costs, Renault has accorded prime importance to project management. In this way the company passed from the conduct of projects in a sequential manner, to cross-functional operation allowing work to proceed coherently and simultaneously.

In 1994, the conventional division into development and methods departments was replaced by engineering departments which were responsible

  • for both the product and the process,

  • for the vehicles on the one hand and mechanical components on the other.

This innovative way of designing vehicles and working together finds its ultimate expression in the Technocentre.

A cross-functional space, designed to encourage team working, brings together 7,500 specialists from all disciplines who take a direct part in the development both of the vehicle range and of the means of producing it. By allowing product and process development to be perfectly synchronised, and bringing together the expertise of the functional units with the project management teams, by combining competence and talent on the one site.

The Technocentre will allow Renault to reduce the vehicle development cycle to 36 months by the year 2000, while achieving savings of at least FRF 1 billion in each programme.

The Technocentre, located at Saint Quentin en Yvelines, in the west of the Paris region, sits at the centre of gravity of other key Renault sites, with which it will have to work, and close to major communications arteries.

The Technocentre is organised into three main areas.

  • The Advance Precinct (l'Avancée), the first building to confront the visitor, most notably houses the exploratory functions, with Design as its focal point.

  • The Hive (la Ruche) is the heart of the Technocentre, bringing together project departments and their "platform teams", the expert functional units from vehicle engineering, and the Research Department.

  • The Prototype Build Centre is found beyond the Hive, the logical conclusion of the work carried on in the Hive, allowing the validation of the technical configuration which defines the manufacturing facility for the production vehicle.

The total investment amounted to FRF 5.5 billion, of which the greater part (80%) was provided by a holding company (Société Civile Immobilière) formed by a banking consortium. Today, this holding company owns the site and the buildings, upon which Renault holds an option to buy.
