SAIC-GM-Wuling Breaks Ground for New R&D Center and Proving Ground

LIUZHOU – SAIC-GM-Wuling broke ground for its new R&D center and proving ground in Liuzhou, Guangxi, on July 12. The facilities, which are adjacent to the joint venture’s Baojun passenger car production base, will support the development of new vehicles for China.

The 376,000-square-meter R&D center is being built in four phases. Phase I will include an advanced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) lab and environmental simulation lab. Phase II will have experimental facilities for parts, materials and structures for electrical devices. Phase III will feature testing facilities for engines, emission systems, safety systems and new energy vehicles. Phase IV will have testing facilities for complete vehicles and a modeling center. The R&D center is scheduled to open in December 2018.

The 853,000-square-meter proving ground will support the evaluation of chassis performance, dynamic performance, NVH, powertrain performance and corrosion resistance. It is expected to be completed by December 2016.

Since its establishment in 2002, SAIC-GM-Wuling has been leveraging resources from China and abroad to provide consumers the highest-quality products. It has recorded many technological achievements and received several national awards for production. In addition, several of its products have become industry leaders. The Wuling Rong Guang created China’s large-size minivan segment. Since its launch three years ago, the Wuling Hong Guang has been the fastest-growing model in China, with more than 1.37 million units delivered. In the first quarter of 2014, it was the world's fourth-best-selling vehicle.

SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co. Ltd. (SAIC-GM-Wuling) was launched on November 18, 2002. SAIC has a 50.1 percent stake, GM China a 44.0 percent stake and Wuling Motors a 5.9 percent stake.
