Expansion of BMW Plant Leipzig

Press shop with extended component production hall in place by 2009

Leipzig, Germany - The BMW Plant Leipzig is to spread its wings under an expansion project scheduled for completion in 2009. Over the next two years a press shop including a component manufacturing wing for doors, bonnets and boot lids will take shape at the plant. The new production halls are expected to create 150 extra jobs, with predicted investment of over 100 million euros channelled into the plant. Construction work on the new halls is due to commence in late 2007.

As things stand, Leipzig sources the individual parts it needs to produce complete bodies from other BMW plants and external suppliers. In the future, however, it will be able to manufacture these parts itself.

To this end, the plant's new press shop will contain a six-stage press in which metal panels are moulded into the desired forms through up to six consecutive working processes.  The second new area - the component manufacturing hall - will house the production of doors, bonnets and boot lids as part of a natural expansion of the existing body construction facility.
