Golf demonstrates fuel saving potential

  • The new Golf 2.0 TDI had an average consumption of just 4.4 litres over 100 kilometres

Wolfsburg - With an average consumption of just 4.4 litres over 100 kilometres, Dietmar Riedelsdorf from Berlin has won the title of Germany's most economic car driver. In a 140 bhp Golf TDI he used a mere 1.24 litres of diesel fuel over a test course of 28 kilometres made up of simulated town traffic and extra urban driving. Further positions were taken by Torsten Fritsch from Eltville with 4.47 litres and Bernd Egbers from Nordhorn with 4.50 litres over 100 kilometres. The fourth place was taken by Dr Michaela Benning from Duisburg, the only woman taking part, with 4.51 litres.

Knut Schüttemeyer, head of the Volkswagen AG Service Division worldwide, presented the first prize of a Volkswagen Polo FSI, valued at 17,000 euro, to the winner at the castle in Wolfsburg.

The subject of reducing fuel consumption is today more important than ever. Volkswagen organised, together with Deutsche Veedol, the central organisation of the German Auto Trade (ZDK) and Autobild magazine, the German fuel saving championship this year for the sixth time to increase awareness of these ecological (and economic) aspects in daily driving habits.

More than 24,000 participants had applied to Autobild this year to take part in the regional preliminary competitions. The 30 most successful participants, 29 men and one woman, were then invited to the Volkswagen test circuit in Wolfsburg for the final competition.

The course for the title on 18th October took the participants in identical Golf TDIs with 103 kW/140 bhp engines over a distance of 28 kilometres. The difference in weight amongst the drivers was compensated for with additional weights. A time limit was also set which gave slower drivers minus points and increased consumption for those who drove too fast.
