BMW Group increases sales by 16% in May

By May, more than 50,000 MINIs have been delivered to customers

Munich - With an increase in sales of 16.4% to 93,982 automobiles (prev.yr. 80,740), the BMW Group has continued its consistent growth trend in May. Up to the end of May, the number of deliveries increased by 18.7% to 449,286 units (prev.yr. 378,547). The BMW brand was able to increase deliveries during the first five months by 5.4% to 390,117 units (prev.yr. 378,521). The threshold of 50,000 was surmounted for MINI deliveries. This means that since the market entry in England in May of the previous year, 75,000 vehicles of the MINI brand have been sold worldwide.

Dr. Michael Ganal, the member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Sales and Marketing, commented: "We have performed pioneering work with the internationally excellent sales performance of the MINI: We can state that even in markets where automobiles of this size have not previously been offered, MINI as premium brand finds very positive acceptance. This confirms our assumption that the automobile characteristics small and premium do not exclude each other."

In almost all markets, the BMW Group has again developed better than the overall market. In Western Europe, sales increased up to the end of May by 18.4% to 278,508 units (prev.yr. 235,299 units). The peak is again formed by the United Kingdom with a plus of 55.0% to 54,532 automobiles delivered, followed by France (plus 29.2% to 18,475 units), Italy (plus 25.6%/26,924 units) and Spain (plus 25.0%/15,063 units). In Germany, the number of automobiles delivered was increased by 6.2% to 115,241 units during the first five months.

North America also saw new sales highs: In the USA, the increase during May amounted to 16.8% to 23,624 vehicles, of those 21,828 automobiles of the BMW brand. This means that the BMW brand for the second month in a row has taken the peak of the segment of luxury automobiles in the USA. Up to the end of May, the BMW Group topped an important threshold with 102,010 units sold. In the same period, Canada also showed peak growth with an increase in sales of 26.2% to 6,503 units.

Strong demand in the Asian markets caused a clear increase of 39.0% in the month of May to 6,598 units for the BMW Group. Up to the end of May, 28,688 units, 19.1% more automobiles than in the previous year, were delivered to customers. In China, sales during the first five months increased by 40.3% to 3,261 units, Taiwan increased by 22.2% to 2,526 units, the Philippines plus 149.7%/357 units, South Korea plus 60.3%/1,702 units.

Growth in the segment of motorcycles after five months amounts to 7.7%: Up to the end of May, 48,053 units were sold (prev.yr.: 44,588 units).
