Volkswagen displays its commitment to sustainable development

Wolfsburg - The World Summit on Sustainable Development is being held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 26 to September 4, 2002. Volkswagen is participating in Johannesburg, as it did at the World Environment Conference ten years ago in Rio de Janeiro.

August 28 is to be Volkswagen Day at the World Summit on Sustainable Development; the company will present a representative selection of its sustainable performance activities. First of all, a technology exhibition will be formally opened at the "Volkswagen Conference Centre" in Johannesburg. A central aspect of this exhibition is the work being carried out on power train and fuel technologies that make efficient use of energy and reduce pollutant emissions. Exhibits such as the Lupo 3L-TDI and Audi A2 TDI cars, which consume only 3 litres of fuel per 100 km, fuel-cell propulsion systems as in the Bora HY.POWER and, as a particular highlight, the 'one-litre car', will be included in this cross-section through Volkswagen's innovative technological research and development work. The exhibition, which will be open from August 26 to September 4, 2002, also illustrates Volkswagen's sense of social responsibility.

After the opening ceremony a press conference will be held on the Volkswagen Group's membership of UN General Secretary Kofi Annan's "Global Compact" initiative.

The programme is rounded off by the international environmental film festival "ecomove", which Volkswagen is again promoting this year, and concerts given by the "Menino" band, which is presenting the project concept "An Hour for the Future". This project, undertaken by Volkswagen's workforce, is devoted to assuring continued support for 'street children' in the cities and regions in which Volkswagen Group plants are situated.

Dr. Peter Hartz, member of the Volkswagen AG Board of Management, and Klaus Volkert, President of the Volkswagen Group's International Works Council, will represent the company in Johannesburg.
