GM Do Brasil Presents The Chevrolet Meriva Chevrolet Meriva Photo: GM The Chevrolet Meriva is the latest automotive innovation presented by GM do Brasil. A global first, it arrives to inaugurate the compact monocab category. Ingeniously versatile, with spacious interiors and a sleek design combined with compact exterior dimensions, the Meriva adapts to the ever-changing and demanding lifestyle of today's consumers. "The Meriva is a great triumph for Chevrolet. It reaches beyond the concept of versatility and comfort anchored at is core, to offer a sleek design that provokes great emotional appeal," said Walter Wieland, president of GM do Brasil. Design & Development The design of the Chevrolet Meriva captures its youthful spirit. It features expressive lines that hint at high-technology and functionality themes. David Rand, director of design at GMB's Design & Engineering Center said, "The design concept has a universal appeal for the progressive-esthetic of younger Chevrolet customers." Rand commented that the design architecture work sought to maximize interior space and accomplished a wheelbase distance of 2.630mm and a vehicle length of 4.042mm. The Chevrolet Meriva was developed by GM do Brasil's Design & Engineering Center in Sau Paulo and Opel's Opel's International Technical Development Center in Rüsselsheim. The team leveraged new and existing technologies for maximum efficiency in developing a unique Meriva concept. Spacious, Functional Interior Design The Meriva features a new dimension of the revolutionary FlexSpace space system. It allows customers to configure its seating and cargo capacity according to their specific needs, without having to remove seats. With a series of simple moves, customers can create space for up to five passengers or trade individual seating space for partial or total cargo use. The FlexSpace system was conceived for maximum flexibility with the knowledge that compact vehicles are usually occupied by one or two passengers, and rarely up to four. The interior package also addresses details that create a comfortable driving experience. Front seats can be adjusted. Door and consoles boast resting and storage space for everything from maps and magazines to eyeglasses. The rear cargo area has features designed to hold small, large and hanging objects. Powertrain Chevrolet customers have two engine options. An eight-valve 1.8 SOHC engine delivers 102 cavalos (cv) at 5.200 rpm, with a maximum torque of 16,8 mkgf at 2.800 and a compression ratio of 9,4:1. It is the four cylinder engine with the highest level torque in its category. A 16-valve 1.8 DOHC delivers 122 cavalos (cv) at 5.600 rpm and a maximum torque of 17,3 mkgf at 3.600 rpm, with a compression ration of 9,8:1. This engine boasts technology which provides more power, torque and lower emissions than comparable engines. It uses a multipoint injection system (SFI) with variable admission (VIM) and "drive-by-wire" control of acceleration (ETC). The six cylinder 1.8 DOHC delivers 122 cavalos (cv) at 5.600 rpm and a maximum torque of 17,3 mkgf at 3.600 rpm, with a compression ration of 9,8:1. This engine boasts technology which provides more power, torque and lower emissions than comparable engines. It uses a multipoint injection system (SFI) with variable admission (VIM) and "drive-by-wire" control of acceleration (ETC). Both engines benefit advanced technology in multipoint, digital and direct fuel injection. An NTA or neutral control axis efficiently aligns the engine at the front sub-chassis, which reduces vibrations and noise for a more comfortable ride. The CAN system ("controlled area network") electronically monitors and commands superior performance. Safety & Security An array of safety and security features provide a reassuring driving experience. Elements such as a sub-frame structural system, a collision sensor that unlocks doors, dual airbags (optional) and a four-wheel sensor ABS system provide protection. Anti-theft features including a keyless entry system and inclination sensor complement the package. The Meriva's electronic instrument panel provides precise information about the vehicle's performance, including a notice for preventive service. "My Meriva," Personalization Options Thirty accessories are available to suit each customer's needs and preferred style. Spoilers, racks and other accessories reinforce the Meriva's athletic spirit. Customers can also complement the Meriva's radio/CD audio system with an MP3 player and more. GM do Brasil leads the personalization trend providing a great range of original accessories for the Chevrolet portfolio. Advanced Manufacturing Systems The Chevrolet Meriva is manufactured using GM's advanced manufacturing systems and processes. The men and women of Sao Jose dos Campos assembly plant in Brazil have worked in multiple teams from the earliest stages of the Meriva's development -- in collaboration with suppliers and specialized teams -- to refine and perfect every single process. The Meriva is assembled with simplicity and attention to detail to ensure the highest quality levels. The Opel Meriva will be manufactured in Zaragoza, Spain. (August 8, 2002) [Homepage] [
